Saturday i set out before 7am for my 20 mile run. This run was looming over me and i so wanted to get it behind me. I ran the same route that i ran for my 18 but added a little detour to get in my extra 2 miles. I picked a very hilly extra 2 but it was the most convenient and i knew their was sidewalk the whole way.I felt good until around 12 miles, my calf started cramping. When i would half to stop for crossing a street i would stretch it a little and got to the point where i was massaging it a little any chance i got. It was a little windy and so a couple of the stretches had to run directly against the wind. Yuck!
By the time John came to find me in the last few miles it was hurting pretty bad, and pretty much just felt all balled up. He told me not to hurt myself and you don't know how bad i just wanted to hop in the van and be done with it! I stopped and walked several times in that last few miles. I hate walking on a run, but i also didn't want to push too hard and jack up my calf for the marathon. I finished the 20, my hips and my calf making me feel like i was 90 years old! I finished in 3 hrs and 19 minutes.
My daughter got sick and she shared it with me so i have been down for the count since Monday but am feeling a little better today so hoping i am at the end of it!
I am now in taper mode, 12 miles this weekend and then 8 next. 18 days to go till marathon day!
Oh that sucks. In the nov issue of RW it talked about long runs and lower immune system. Maybe you should look into wearing calf compression sleeves during your long runs? do you think that would help?? 18 days is a long time you'll do GREAT!!! hang in there <3 xo
